Yes the Gifts of the Spirit are for Today

1 Cor 1:4-7 speaks of all the gifts being here up until the Lord returns. The Lord hasn't returned yet so according to these scripture all the gifts are still for us today.

Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

What Some say Today

In (Acts 2:4) we read how all 120 in the upper room were filled with the Holy Ghost, and spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance. In (Acts 19:2) we find Paul asking the question have you received the Spirit after that you believed. Then he laid his hands on them to received the Baptism in the Holy Ghost. The evidence that they received was the same in both places. They spoke with tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance. The evidence is still the same today! Some say well I think I received or I received it by faith. Some have been carried in the back room of some Church and taught how to speak in tongues. But the scripture says they spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave the utterance, and the evidence is still tongues today. You don't have to wander if you've received it you will know.

What was the evidence that convinced Peter in Caesarea (Acts 10:44-46) tongues. In Samaria when Peter and John laid hands on those who believed the Gospel the Holy Ghost came on them in such power and manifestation that Simon who used sorcery, and bewitched the people desired to pay money that he could lay hands on people also. It doesn't say there that they spoke in tongues because Luke takes it for granite the readers knew (Acts 8:14-22). The receiving or Baptism of the Spirit was the norm after salvation with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

The gifts of the Spirit were not to establish proofs of the word of the Lord for a temporary time as some say. Paul exhorted the Corinthians to seek the Gifts to the edifying of the Church (1Cor 14:12). The gifts are for the edification of the Church, with the exhortation, and responsibility to desire and seek them today .

Some say tongues, and the gifts have been done away with, and quote 1 Cor 13:8.

(1Co 13:8) Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. But they are completely taking it out of context with the scriptures that follow.

(1Co 13:9-13) For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

These scriptures are speaking of eternity, and growing up in the Lord. Paul had just been speaking about charity, and again brings it up in verse 13. Also when the Lord returns we shall see Him face to face, praise the Lord. In eternity we will not need prophecy for then it will have all been fulfilled! Now we see in part now we prophecy in part , but when that which is perfect has come then, and only then will we not need the gifts. His point is perfection in eternity, and growth in the Lord now. For when we see Him we shall be like him. His exhortation is to seek the gifts for edification. Back to the Top

What the Bible Says

1 Cor 1:4-7 speaks of all the gifts being here up until the Lord returns. The Lord hasn't returned yet so according to these scripture all the gifts are still for us today.

(1Co 1:4-7) I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge. Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The very same word for gift in (1 Cor1: 7) is used for miracle working gifts in other scriptures (Rom12:6, 1Cor 12:4, 12:9, 12:28, 12:30-31). (1 Cor 1: 7) does state clearly that all the gifts will still be here up until the time of our Lords return.

Paul is tying the spiritual gifts with the Lords return. He first thanks God for the grace that was given them that all of the gifts were given to them. In verse 5 the word knowledge is the very same word in 1 Cor 12:8 for the word of knowledge a supernatural manifestation of the Spirit. The word come behind in verse 7 can be rendered by Strong’s as not to lack or fall short in any gift waiting for the coming of the Lord.

(1 Cor 1:7) speaks of the spiritual gifts mentioned in 1 Cor 12 including the supernatural ones, also nowhere in this Epistle or in scripture anywhere are the spiritual gifts eliminated or done away with until the end of this age. Christ’s second coming eternity ext. Yes Tongues and the Gifts of the Spirit are for today. My prayer and desire is for the Church to seek them for the edification of the Church and endowment of power. Back to the Top
